DAY 1 Arrival in Panama and transfer to Hotel Ejecutivo. Overnight Panama.
DAY 2 Metropolitan Nature Park
Early breakfast. Panama Birding introduction at Metropolitan Nature Park. This is known as the Lungs of the City in which 266 species of birds are found. This protected area plays an important part in the environmental education of Panamanian citizens. Look for Slaty-tailed Trogon, White necked Puffbirds, Green Honeycreeper, Pheasant Cuckoo, Blue crowned Motmot, Lance tailed Manakin, Rufous and white Wren, and many others. The rest of the day will be free. Overnight Executive. |
DAY 3 Pipeline Road the most accessible tropical rainforest in the Americas Birding excursion along the world famous Pipeline Road. Box lunch in the field. Hot species of the area include the Pheasant Cuckoo, Black Hawk-Eagle, Brown-hooded Parrot, Yellow-green Tyrannulet, and the Golden-crowned Spadebill. Free afternoon and night. Overnight Executive Hotel.
DAY 4 Barro Colorado Nature Monument
Early drive to the town of Gamboa, near the midpoint of the Panama Canal. In Gamboa we board our specially designed boat for a cruise across Gatun Lake to the Nature Monument of Barro Colorado. Formed when the lake was built as part of the Panama Canal. We will visit the west side of Barro Colorado Island which was a hill before the lake was formed. Established as the first wildlife reserve in the New World Tropics. The island has become a world famous site for tropical research and continues today under the management of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute. We will have the opportunity to observe the wildlife from the comfort of the boat and then hike at Peninsula Gigante where we can observe more flora and fauna such as Mantled Howler Monkey, Agouti, Sloth, Keel-billed Toucan, Greater Ani, Yellow-backed Oriole and more. Rare species often seen here include King Vulture, American Crocodile and Peccary. While at Peninsula Gigante we will enjoy a picnic lunch before reboarding our boat for the return trip to Gamboa. DAY 5 Achiote Road
Early rise and head to Achiote on the Atlantic slope. This is a popular area for Auduboners and Christmas birdcounters. Look for Rufous-crested Coquette, Black-bellied Wren, Montezuma Oropendola, Black-chested Jay, Chestnut-mandibled Toucan, White Hawk, White-necked Jacobin, Pied Puffbird, Spot-crowned Barbet, Semiplumbeous Hawk and others. Lunch at Tarpon Club. After lunch return to Panama. Free afternoon and overnight at the Hotel. Includes snacks.
DAY 6 Tocumen Marshes
This wetland is located near Tocumen International Airport east of Panama City. Now largely converted to rice fields, the area contains a number of ponds good for freshwater birds such as rails, herons, ducks, anhingas, and some shorebirds. Snacks included.
Free afternoon for shopping. Overnight Executive Hotel.
DAY 7 Breakfast. Transfer out.
